The Mama AgudZE II Reading PRogram

The Mama Agudze II Reading Program is an early literacy initiative of the Addae Family Foundation focused on nurturing a love of reading and strengthening foundational literacy skills among young children in Ghana.

The program promotes early exposure to books and positive reading experiences by:
  • Providing age-appropriate, culturally relevant books
  • Encouraging shared reading between children and caregivers
  • Supporting early language and literacy development

We recognize that literacy begins long before formal schooling and is shaped by consistent, supportive environments at home and in the community.

Early literacy is closely linked to long-term educational success. Limited access to books and reading materials can place children at a disadvantage before they ever enter the classroom. The Mama Agudze II Reading Program works to close this gap by helping children build strong reading foundations early.

Our goal is to increase access to books, encourage family-centered reading habits, and support children in developing the skills and confidence they need to succeed in school and beyond.

The EMPOWERED SCHOLARS PROGRAM

The Empowered Scholars Program is designed to support outstanding students from Ghana who will be the first in their families to obtain a college degree. The program is success-driven and holistic, centering not only academic achievement but also student wellness, leadership development, and community impact.

By investing in students at critical stages of their educational journey, the program aims to reduce financial and structural barriers while supporting scholars as they navigate the path to higher education and beyond.

Academic Scholarships
Empowered Scholars receive a full-tuition scholarship to attend a secondary or post-secondary institution, helping remove financial barriers that often limit access to higher education.

Cohort Programming
Scholars are selected as part of a cohort that progresses through the Empowered Scholars Program together. The cohort model creates a supportive learning community where students share experiences, build relationships, and develop leadership skills alongside peers with similar goals.

Mentorship & Support
Each scholar is paired with a mentor to support their educational journey. Scholars also have access to advisors who provide guidance in career development, academic planning, and financial literacy.

the big dream initiative

The Big Dream Initiative is a youth development effort focused on expanding what Ghanaian youth believe is possible for their own futures. While the Foundation's reading program builds early literacy skills, the Big Dream Initiative addresses a different need: helping students form ambitious, concrete aspirations for their lives beyond school.

The initiative supports the youth's sense of possibility by:
  • Distributing aspirational, culturally grounded books—including Abena's Big Dream by Cynthia Addae—that introduce children to characters who share their background and pursue expansive goals
  • Donating books and school supplies to under-resourced schools so that students have the materials to support their learning
  • Encouraging classroom and school environments where their ambitions are affirmed and taken seriously

We recognize that students' beliefs about their own futures form early and shape the goals they set, the effort they invest, and the opportunities they pursue. When students rarely encounter examples of people like them achieving at high levels, their aspirations can narrow before their abilities are ever tested.

The Big Dream Initiative works to counter this by placing evidence of possibility directly in front of children, in the stories they read, the resources they receive, and the encouragement they hear at school.

Our goal is to ensure that youth in Ghana grow up with the imagination, confidence, and support to pursue futures as large as their talents allow.
